I came across a blog post today that really resonated with me, stuff that I have been saying all along. You can find the blog post here on Tobacco Truth.
Everyone I know is aware that I love electronic cigarettes, but there are many out there who still question whether or not they are safe. They still have nicotine, right? It’s what I’m always asked. My reply to this all the time is this — yes, it is still too early to be calling these products safe. They’re so new, and there’s no way of knowing the long term effects just yet since they were introduced only a (relatively) short time ago. BUT … I always say that you would have to be able to say that they are safer than traditional tobacco.
Traditional tobacco cigarettes contain thousands of agents, most of which are created when the cigarette is lit / combusted. The flame and combustion creates all those chemical reactions and byproducts. On the other hand, electronic cigarette e liquid (like the ones sold here) only contains a few ingredients, all of which are known. There’s water, propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, nicotine additive, and flavoring.
Given the stark difference in the ingredients in these two choices, I know which one I’m going with if I need my nicotine fix. While I do also have hesitations about what could potentially happen long term, I know in my heart that this is a better alternative than sticking with my old pack of smokes. We KNOW the long term effects of those, and they aren’t pretty (obviously).
It says in the blog post that it took decades of studies to truly understand the effects of cigarette smoking, so the jury is still out on e cigs since they’ve been around for ten or so years. However, with the advancement of technology, we may have a shorter timeline to be able to see and predict what effects e cigs may have.
Either way, I like how the blog post ends — Smokers shouldn’t wait to vape.
