As I was browsing the Google News today for mentions of electronic cigarettes (come on, I can’t be the only one who has an alert set up for “electronic cigarettes”, am I?) I came across a headline that immediately caught my eye.
In an article titled “Traditional cigarette smoking down again for youths; e-cig experimentation up” on JournalNow.com, they say that cigarette smoking among teens has dropped to a historic low. Obviously, great news.
They further mention that, however, “researchers expressed concern that electronic cigarettes are gaining popularity for experimentation”. I have mixed feelings about that statement.
I mean, yeah, the jury is still out on whether electronic cigarettes are safe. But there’s no debate on that they are safer that traditional cigarettes. If teens are getting a nicotine fix, and the choice is traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes, I think we can all agree that it is much more preferable that they go with the latter instead of the former.
A statistic that came as a surprise to me is that e-cig/vaporizer (like these ones) use among teens was greater than that of traditional cigarettes, for the second consecutive year. I wasn’t aware of that – pretty cool.
There’s a lot more in the article and I suggest you give it a read if you have five free minutes. But in brief, it’s some good news I wanted to share with the readers.
